Drywashing for Desert Placer
Out in the dry Southwest, there is gold sitting in gravels that almost never feel running water. The usual way to free placer gold is to wash it, but you don't actually need water to do the sorting. You just need something to lift the lighter material away so the heavy gold can settle, and that is exactly what a drywasher does with moving air and a steady vibration. Understand it, and whole stretches of desert that other people drive past start to look like ground worth your time.
Why Dry Placers Form Out Here
A placer is where gold has weathered out of its hard-rock source and gathered in loose sediment. The gold breaks free as the surrounding rock erodes, then gravity drops it into low spots wherever moving water loses energy. In most country a river does the carrying; in the desert, the carrier is the rare flash flood, so the gold lands in the same quiet traps, just in dry ground. Keep an eye out for:
- Alluvial fans, where a steep canyon spills out into a basin and drops its load
- Desert washes and dry arroyos that only run during storms
- Bench and terrace gravels left behind by older, higher channels
- Gravels eroding straight off gold-bearing bedrock nearby
Placer gold turns up along many of the intermittent and ephemeral streams of arid regions in Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and southern California, and in plenty of those places a large reserve of low-grade placer gold may still be waiting. It sits untouched for the very reason you're here: with no permanent water supply, recovering it takes dry or semidry methods rather than a conventional wash plant. Arizona alone has a deep placering history, with desert districts documented for decades.
How a Drywasher Does the Work
The principle is the same one behind every placer tool: gold is heavy. Impure gold runs about 16 to 18 in density, while the waste rock around it sits near 2.5. That gap, roughly six to seven times heavier, lets gravity pull gold cleanly away from clay, silt, sand, and gravel once something gets the material moving. A drywasher uses air to do the moving instead of water:
- You feed material onto an inclined screen or tray fitted with riffles, much like a sluice
- A bellows or blower pushes air up through a porous cloth or membrane under the bed
- The rising air and the vibration fluidize the dry sediment so it flows like a loose, living mass
- The light grains stay buoyant and ride off the end, while the dense gold sinks and lodges behind the riffles
The gold settles first and stays put; the lighter stuff simply blows away.
Keep It Dry, Classified, and Patient
A drywasher only works on material that is thoroughly dry, and this is the rule people most often learn the hard way. Even slightly damp sand clumps up, clogs the cloth, and lets gold ride right over the riffles with the waste, so sun-dry your material or screen the moisture out first.
Classifying matters too. Screen your feed to a consistent grain size before running it and the air can stratify the bed cleanly, the same way a stream sorts material by size and weight. Expect a slower, less efficient pace than washing the same gravel with water, since that's the trade where water is absent, and fine, flat "flour" gold is especially tough to catch on air alone. Work deliberately and you'll hold on to far more of it.
Limits, Land, and Staying Safe
Drywashing recovers gold where water never could, but it doesn't change who owns the ground. Before anything else, figure out where prospecting is allowed. National Parks are closed to it, and some Forest Service and BLM lands are open only under specific rules. Mining claims are staked for locatable minerals including gold, with placer claims limited to 20 acres per locator, and individual states can add their own location and recording requirements. Casual collecting on BLM land is allowed only in limited, noncommercial situations, never where there are active claims or where the mineral estate is privately held.
The desert adds its own demands. Plan for extreme heat with no shade, carry your own water, respect the flash-flood danger in the very washes that hold the gold, and remember how far you may be from help.
