Following Float to the Lode
Some of the best discoveries in prospecting begin not with a vein, but with a stray piece of rock lying where it doesn't belong. That piece is called float — a loose chunk of mineralized rock, like gold-bearing quartz or rusty iron-stained gossan, that has weathered out of a bedrock vein and tumbled away from where it formed. Gold is heavy and slow to break down, so the metal and its host rock loosen, creep down hillsides, and wash into drainages over time. Float is the visible thread that ties a placer sign back to the hard-rock lode that fed it. Learning to follow that thread is one of the oldest skills you can carry, and it has led patient prospectors straight to the source again and again. Let's walk through how you read it.
Recognizing Float
You're looking for rock that simply doesn't match its surroundings. Train your eye for the pieces that stand out from the country rock around them.
- Watch for vein quartz, rusty gossan, sulfide-bearing fragments, or anything with visible mineralization that looks foreign to the slope it's resting on.
- Don't trust your eyes alone for the gold itself — it often isn't visible. Collect and label your suspect pieces so representative samples can go to assay later.
- Tell true float apart from residual debris sitting essentially at the outcrop. That residual material hasn't traveled; it's parked right next to its source.
- Pay attention to character. A quartz fragment with limonite boxwork or sulfide casts is a far stronger lead than a plain, barren piece.
Reading Distance From the Source
Once you've found float, it starts telling you how far it has come. Two things guide you.
- Angularity is your best clue. Sharp, jagged, fresh-broken edges mean short travel and a source close by. Well-rounded, worn pieces have come a long way.
- Abundance is your second clue. Float generally grows more plentiful as you near the source — and then disappears entirely above it.
- The place where float (or your panned gold) stops showing as you work upward brackets the source neatly between the last "show" and the first "blank."
Working Up-Slope and Up-Drainage
Here is the heart of the method, and it's wonderfully simple. Float moves downhill, so you move the other way — always up.
- Trace float UP-slope and up-drainage, never down. Gravity carried it to you; you're walking back toward where it started.
- In a stream, follow the values upstream until they fade, then test the side gulches and the hillslopes alongside, where fresh float may be feeding into the channel.
- On a hillside, fan out across the slope above your float trail. The source vein usually sits on the high side, above the point where float thins out.
- Move in stages. Re-check abundance and angularity at every step so the trend keeps pointing you toward the source.
Cross-Checking With the Pan and the Geology
Float is a strong lead, but it's even stronger when a second line of evidence agrees with it. Your pan and the geology are exactly that.
- Treat the pan as a sampling tool, not just a way to recover gold. It lets you trace values systematically as you move.
- When your panning values rise toward the source — more colors, and coarser ones — they should track right alongside your float trail. Two lines pointing the same way build real confidence.
- Coarser, rougher gold tends to mean you're closer to the lode, the very same logic as angularity in float.
- Lean on favorable geology and structure too: known mineralized belts, the right host rocks, alteration, and the faults or vein systems that could carry gold. Knowing the ground you're standing on makes everything you read more reliable.
