Not every gem is dug from rock. Organic gems are made by living things — a pearl inside an oyster, amber from an ancient tree, coral from a reef animal, jet from fossil wood. They are soft and easily harmed, so they ask for gentle care. Pearl is a June birthstone.
Cultured pearl — nacre, layer on layer
Most gems are minerals crystallized in the earth's heat and pressure. These four skip all that. A pearl grows in layers of nacre inside a mollusc; amber is tree resin turned to stone over millions of years; coral is the carbonate skeleton a reef colony leaves behind; jet is wood fossilized into a velvety black.
Because they come from life, they're soft (around Mohs 2–4) and react to acids, heat and chemicals. They reward gentle handling — and, for coral especially, careful sourcing.

Made by living things
These gems form without the earth's heat and pressure. A pearl is nacre — aragonite and protein — laid in layers around an irritant inside a mollusc (most pearls today are cultured). Amber is fossilized tree resin, sometimes holding insects millions of years old. Precious coral is the calcium-carbonate skeleton of marine polyps. — GIA

Soft, reactive — and, for coral, source it with care. Organic gems are only Mohs ~2–4, and (pearl and coral being calcium carbonate) are attacked by acids, perfume, cosmetics and heat; pearls are porous, so wipe them after wear and never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. On sourcing: black coral is internationally controlled under CITES, and precious red and pink coral is overharvested and trade-regulated — ask for documentation of origin.
