Pyrite & Fool's Gold

How to tell pyrite (FeS₂) and other gold look-alikes from real gold using simple field tests — hardness, malleability, streak, and heft — plus why pyrite can still signal good gold country.

There's a moment every prospector remembers: a flash of yellow in the pan, the heart kicks, the hand shakes a little reaching for it. Then someone older leans over, squints, and says the words you don't want to hear — "that's pyrite." It stings the first time. But here's the good news: telling the real thing from the pretender isn't a gift you're born with. It's a handful of simple checks you can do with a pin, a tile, and your own two hands. Learn them once and you'll never be fooled again.

Meet Pyrite

Pyrite is iron disulfide, FeS₂, and it's one of the most common minerals on Earth. The name comes from the Greek pyr, meaning "fire," because it throws sparks when struck against metal — old wheel-lock guns spun a serrated wheel against a piece of it to spark the powder. So in a real sense pyrite is a "fire stone" first and a fake gold second.

It's brass-yellow and metallic, harder than you'd guess at Mohs 6 to 6.5, and it loves to grow in tidy crystal shapes — cubes, twelve-sided pyritohedrons, sometimes octahedra, often with fine parallel lines (striations) etched across the faces. That geometry is your first quiet clue. Gold almost never shows up in neat little cubes; pyrite practically brags about them.

The Tests That Never Lie

Color fools people, so don't trust your eyes alone. Trust these instead — any one of them will usually settle it, and together they're airtight:

  • Hardness: Gold is soft, Mohs about 2.5 to 3, and a pin or knife point dents it. Pyrite is hard at 6 to 6.5 — a knife won't scratch it, but pyrite will happily scratch a copper penny.
  • Malleability: Press or tap a tiny piece. Gold bends, flattens, and cuts like cold butter. Pyrite is brittle — it shatters, crumbles, or just refuses to give.
  • Streak: Drag it across an unglazed ceramic tile. Gold leaves a golden-yellow streak. Pyrite leaves a dark greenish-black to brownish-black streak, every time.
  • Heft: Gold is astonishingly dense, a specific gravity near 19.3. Pyrite sits around 5 — roughly a quarter the weight. A real nugget feels far heavier than it looks.
  • Look and shine: Gold glows a soft yellow and shines from every angle, even in shade. Pyrite is brassier and tends to glint only when light catches a face just right.

The streak test alone has saved more disappointed afternoons than any other trick. A black smear on white tile is pyrite confessing.

Other Pretenders

Pyrite isn't the only one playing dress-up. Chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂, a copper-iron sulfide) is often even brassier and sometimes tarnishes to a peacock iridescence — but it's softer than pyrite, around 3.5 to 4, lighter still, and it leaves the same dark greenish-black streak. The pin test gives it away just as fast.

Then there's mica — flakes of biotite or phlogopite that throw a bright flash in the pan. But mica is feather-light, it floats, and a gentle press with a pin makes it flex and snap rather than bend. Real gold flexes around the pin and stays.

Worth knowing too: marcasite. It's the same chemistry as pyrite, FeS₂, but it grows in a different crystal system — orthorhombic instead of cubic — so it's paler, often forms spiky "cockscomb" clusters, and it's unstable, slowly crumbling and giving off sulfuric acid as it breaks down. If a brassy specimen is falling apart in your pocket, suspect marcasite.

When Fool's Gold Isn't So Foolish

Here's the twist that keeps pyrite interesting. Sometimes it isn't lying — it's pointing. Pyrite forms in many of the same places gold does: quartz veins, hydrothermal systems, the very plumbing that carries gold up through rock. So a pocket of pyrite can mean you're standing in promising country.

And pyrite can literally carry gold. In Carlin-type deposits in Nevada, USGS researchers found gold locked inside tiny arsenic-rich pyrite grains — particles too small to see under a microscope. They call it "invisible" or refractory gold, and entire mines are built on it. Pyrite was also long mined in its own right as a source of sulfur for sulfuric acid. So before you toss that brassy lump, remember: it may be worthless itself, yet still be telling you the neighborhood is good.
