Reading a Stream for Gold
Moving water is what concentrates placer gold, but it doesn't scatter it everywhere — it sets gold down only where it can no longer carry it. The reason is weight. Gold is far denser than the sand, gravel, and quartz it travels with, roughly 16 to 19 against about 2.5 for ordinary rock, so it behaves differently from everything else in the streambed. During high water the whole bed load of sand, gravel, and boulders is stirred up and shoved downstream, and the gold works its way down through it. As the flow eases, the fine gold gathers in depressions and pockets where the current slackens. Learning to read a stream is really just learning to see those places — where the water's energy fades and the heaviest material drops out with it. Once you have that eye, the rest follows naturally.
Stream Energy: The One Idea Behind Everything
Almost everything on this page comes back to a single principle: fast water carries gold, slow water lets it go.
- During floods and high water the stream has the most energy and can roll even coarse gravel and gold along. This is when gold travels and works its way downward through the bed toward bedrock.
- Wherever the current slows — a widening, a change in depth, an obstruction, the inside of a bend — the water loses its grip on dense particles, and gold settles first because it is heaviest.
- Gold also resists weathering and corrosion, so once it drops it stays put and builds up over many flood cycles. That repeated concentration over time is what turns a scattering of color into a deposit worth working.
Read the water for where its energy falls, and you are reading for gold.
Where Gold Drops Out
The same physics keeps producing the same recognizable traps. Train your eye on the spots where fast water is forced to slow down or change direction.
- Inside bends (point bars): On a curve, the water races along the outside cut bank and slacks off on the inside. Gravel and gold pile up on the inside-bend point bar.
- Behind and in front of boulders: A big obstruction creates a calm pocket right downstream, and sometimes a pile-up just upstream, where heavy material settles out.
- Downstream of riffles, drops, and rapids: Where churning fast water spills into a quieter pool or flattens out, the current loses its strength and gold drops at the tail-out.
- Bedrock crevices, cracks, and potholes: Solid bedrock works like a natural sluice. Gold drives down into cracks, joints, and scoured potholes and stays held there.
- On and just above bedrock: Heavy minerals are usually found on and just above bedrock and in its cracks and crevices, and hollows in the bedrock are favorable places for gold to gather. This is why prospectors so often dig down to a point just above bedrock, where placer gold tends to collect.
- On clay "false bottoms": A tight clay layer sitting above true bedrock can stop downward-working gold cold, creating a shallower pay layer that mimics bedrock.
Pay Streaks and Black Sand
Gold doesn't spread evenly across a bar — it lines up in concentrated ribbons. Prospectors call these concentrations pay streaks. A pay streak often follows the path the heaviest water took during flood stage, which is not always where the main current runs today, so don't assume the richest ground sits under the water you see now.
- Watch for black sand, mostly magnetite along with other heavy minerals. You want to look where coarse sands and gravels have built up and where black sands have settled out with the gold. Black sand is gold's visible companion because both are heavy and drop in the same places.
- Find the heavy-mineral line and you have very likely found the gold line.
Using These Clues to Sample
- Pan or sample at several points rather than just one, favoring the places that show concentrations of heavy minerals.
- Test the inside of bends, the tail-outs of riffles, the downstream side of boulders, and above all down on bedrock and in its crevices.
- Note where black sand concentrates as you move between samples, and let it lead you toward the pay streak.
- Don't overlook old high benches. Older stream channels, even ones now sitting above the active water, can still hold gold from earlier erosion cycles.
