Meet the Pretenders

Three minerals do most of the fooling, and the U.S. Geological Survey names all three. Pyrite (iron sulfide) is the classic — brassy, sparkly, and often grown into crisp little cubes. Chalcopyrite (a copper-iron sulfide) is the second "fool's gold," a touch more golden but usually wearing a faint blue, green, or purple tarnish. And weathered mica — flakes of muscovite catching the sun — can throw a convincing golden wink from a streambed. Each is common, each is harmless, and each has tells that gold simply can't fake.

The Soft-Metal Test

This is the big one. Gold is soft and famously malleable — push it, press it, or tap it and it dents and flattens like a sliver of lead. It won't crack. The pretenders do the opposite. The USGS puts it plainly: pyrite, chalcopyrite, and mica will flake, powder, or crumble when poked with a metal point, while gold gouges or indents.

Read the Streak

Drag your sample across a piece of unglazed white porcelain and look at the line it leaves. This little trick cuts through surface color, and it's decisive. Gold leaves a golden-yellow streak — the same warm color as the metal itself. Pyrite and chalcopyrite betray themselves with a dark greenish-black streak, nothing like the sample's shiny face. Mica leaves a white streak. If the line on the porcelain doesn't match the gleam, you're holding a pretender.

Light, Shape, and Heft

  • The way it shines. Pyrite glints when the angle is right and goes flat when you turn it; gold glows warmly from any angle, in any light.
  • Crystal shape. Pyrite loves sharp geometry — cubes and octahedrons with fine striped lines on the faces. Gold doesn't grow neat crystal cubes like that.
  • Color. Chalcopyrite runs brassy with an oily, iridescent tarnish; gold stays a steady buttery yellow.
  • Weight. Gold is extraordinarily dense — a specific gravity around 19.3, per Britannica. Pyrite sits near 5 and mica under 3. Real gold feels startlingly heavy for its size; mica feels feather-light, almost weightless in the palm.

When the Eye Isn't Enough

A streak plate and a pin will steer you right most of the time, but tarnished, fine, or mixed samples can fool even a careful eye, and the pretenders sometimes travel alongside the real thing.
