Types & Forms of Gold

Gold occurs as native metal (almost always alloyed with silver, sometimes copper), as non-gold-coloured tellurides, and as 'invisible' refractory gold locked in pyrite or arsenopyrite. It is found in primary lode (quartz-vein) and secondary placer deposits, takes shapes from nuggets to flour and crystalline gold, and has purity measured in fineness (parts per 1000) or karat (24ths).

Hold a real piece of gold and you understand the obsession in a heartbeat — it is heavy, warm-coloured, and it never rusts, tarnishes, or fades. But "gold" is not one single thing. It turns up in a handful of forms, from a nugget you could lift straight out of a creek to gold so fine it hides, invisible, inside another mineral. Knowing which form you're looking at — and which you're actually likely to find — quietly changes how you hunt for it.

Native gold — the metal itself

Most of the gold a prospector dreams about is native gold: gold occurring in nature as the metal, not bound up in a chemical compound. It is almost never perfectly pure, though. Native gold nearly always carries some silver, and often a trace of copper, mixed right into the metal. That small detail explains a lot — including why two pieces of "gold" can look slightly different in colour.

Colour, silver, and electrum

Pure gold is a rich, unmistakable yellow. Add silver and the colour pales toward a lighter, almost greenish tint; add copper and it warms toward rose. When the silver content climbs high enough, the natural gold–silver alloy gets its own old name: electrum, a paler, brassier gold the ancients valued in its own right. Prospectors and refiners describe how much gold a piece holds as its fineness — parts of gold per thousand. A nugget at 900 fine is 90% gold; the rest is mostly silver.

When gold hides — tellurides and "invisible" gold

Here is the part the legends leave out: a great deal of the world's gold never looks like gold at all. In some districts, gold bonds with the element tellurium to form telluride minerals — metallic, but not gold-coloured, so the gold is locked inside and easy to walk past. Even more common is refractory or "invisible" gold, scattered so finely through minerals like pyrite that no eye or pan can see it; freeing it takes a mill and chemistry, not a gold pan. The glinting nugget is the romantic exception. Most gold is quietly hidden — which is exactly why reading the rocks matters as much as washing the gravel.

Placer or lode — worn, or fresh

Gold also comes in two great families defined by where it has been. Lode (or hard-rock) gold is primary gold still sitting in the bedrock where hot fluids left it, usually threaded through quartz veins; it tends to look fresh, sometimes sharply crystalline. Placer gold is secondary — freed from a lode by weathering, then tumbled and rounded as water carried it downstream into gravels. Placer pieces are smoother and worn, and often slightly purer at the surface, where the silver has leached away on the long journey.

The shapes you'll actually see

  • Nuggets — solid lumps, the rarest and most celebrated form. Big ones are genuinely uncommon.
  • Flakes and "colours" — small flattened pieces, the everyday reward of a good pan.
  • Flour (or dust) gold — gold so fine and flat it almost floats; the easiest of all to lose.
  • Crystalline, wire, and leaf gold — gold grown into delicate crystals, threads, or sheets. Rare and beautiful, it's often worth far more to a collector than its weight in melted metal.

Fineness and karat

Two different worlds measure gold's purity. Geologists and refiners use fineness in parts per thousand. Jewellers use karat in twenty-fourths — 24-karat is pure, 18-karat is 18 parts gold to 6 of other metals. Both are saying the same thing in different dialects: how much of this is really gold.
