What Is a Mineral?

A mineral is a naturally occurring, generally inorganic solid with a definite chemical composition and an ordered internal (crystal) structure; a rock, by contrast, is an aggregate of minerals. Around 6,000 mineral species are known, with new ones approved by the International Mineralogical Association.

Pick up a clear quartz crystal and turn it in the light. Those flat faces and sharp edges weren't carved by anyone — they grew that way, atom by atom, following a rule the crystal has obeyed since it formed deep in the rock. That quiet orderliness is the whole secret. A mineral isn't just "a pretty stone." It's matter that built itself according to a plan. Once you can see that plan, the ground under your feet starts to make sense.

So let's get the definition right, because the rest of this volume rests on it.

The Five-Part Definition

Most geologists agree a substance has to clear five hurdles before it earns the word "mineral":

1. Naturally occurring. The Earth made it, not a factory. Steel is an alloy people produce, so steel is not a mineral. 2. Generally inorganic. It wasn't built by a living organism's life processes. Wood and pearl are made by organisms, so they aren't minerals in the strict sense. (More on the word "generally" below — it's doing real work.) 3. Solid. Not a liquid or gas at ordinary temperature and pressure. Liquid water isn't a mineral; frozen as ice, it is. 4. A definite (characteristic) chemical composition. Every sample of the mineral has the same recipe, give or take a narrow range. Halite — common rock salt — is always sodium and chlorine in a 1:1 ratio, NaCl. 5. An ordered internal structure. The atoms sit in a repeating, geometric pattern. In halite, sodium and chlorine alternate in a tidy cubic lattice that repeats in every direction.

Meet all five, and you have a mineral. Miss one, and you have something else — which turns out to be just as interesting.

A Mineral Is Not a Rock

This trips up almost everyone at first, so let's settle it. A mineral is a single, pure substance with one recipe. A rock is an aggregate — a mixture of mineral grains packed together. Granite is the classic example: look closely and you'll see pink feldspar, glassy quartz, and dark flecks of mica and amphibole, all in the same hand-sized piece. That's four minerals making one rock.

Put simply: minerals are the ingredients; rocks are the dish. When you learn to name the grains, you've learned to read the rock.

Crystals and Crystal Systems

That "ordered internal structure" has a name when it grows into a visible shape — a crystal. Because the atoms always stack the same way, a given mineral tends toward the same external geometry whenever it has room to grow freely. Quartz reaches for six-sided prisms with pointed tips; halite favors cubes; calcite cleaves into slanted rhombs.

Mineralogists sort all this geometry into a handful of crystal systems — broad families defined by the symmetry of the internal lattice (cubic, hexagonal, and so on). The shape on the outside is a clue to the order on the inside, which is why crystal form is one of the first things a geologist notices.

"Generally Inorganic" and the Mineraloids

Here's where honesty matters more than a clean rule. The classic definition said "inorganic," full stop — but real mineralogy is a little softer. Some substances form through living processes yet are otherwise identical to a mineral; aragonite, for instance, occurs both inorganically in rocks and organically in seashells. Modern practice often accepts these, which is why the careful phrasing is "generally inorganic."

Then there are the near-misses: natural solids that look and behave like minerals but fail the crystal test. Obsidian is volcanic glass — no ordered atomic structure — and opal lacks a true repeating lattice. We call these mineraloids. There are quirks at the edges, too: liquid mercury is still listed as a mineral mostly for historical reasons. The definition is a strong rule with a few honest footnotes, not an iron law.

How Many Minerals Are There?

Roughly 6,000 — and counting. As of 2025 the official IMA–CNMNC list passed 6,000 valid mineral species, and the number climbs every year as new ones are found.

Those approvals aren't casual. The International Mineralogical Association, through its Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC), reviews every proposed new mineral and every new name. A find isn't an official species until that body signs off, with type material usually stored in a museum or university collection. That gatekeeping is why "mineral species" means the same thing to a geologist in Tehran as it does to one in Tucson.

A fair word of caution. Telling minerals apart takes real testing — hardness, streak, the way light plays on a fresh face — not a glance at a photo. The eye alone fools experts, never mind beginners.
