Everybody's got a name in this story, and half of them are borrowed. The leader? Robert LeRoy Parker — but you know him as Butch Cassidy. Riding with him, a loose crew that came and went: the Sundance Kid, Harvey "Kid Curry" Logan, Elzy Lay, Will "News" Carver, Ben "Tall Texan" Kilpatrick, Laura Bullion. The papers called them the Wild Bunch.
Their playground was Wyoming, late 1890s into the 1900s. Their move was the Union Pacific train robbery — stop the train, blow the safe, scatter, gone before the dust settled. But here's what really kept them alive: it wasn't just guts. It was the land. They ran a loop of hideouts — Hole-in-the-Wall, Brown's Park, the Red Desert, Hoback Canyon, Star Valley, the Wind River country — and melted into them after every job.
> Status: FACT. The robberies and the hideouts? Documented history. The buried treasure stories — the part everybody wishes were true — no reliable source backs them up, so we keep those firmly on the legend shelf.
You don't need to dress this one up. For a few wild years, a handful of riders made the richest railroad around look helpless — and then rode straight off the edge of the map.
