The Tipton Train Robbery

August 29, 1900 — barely a year after Wilcox, the Wild Bunch did it again, and left fresh horses waiting every 20 miles.

You'd think after Wilcox the railroad would've been ready. They weren't.

Just after 8:30 in the evening on August 29, 1900, the Wild Bunch flagged down Union Pacific passenger train No. 3 near Tipton Station, Wyoming. Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, Kid Curry, and a fourth man — most likely Will Carver — climbed aboard and went to work on the express car, same as before.

The take was big again: somewhere around $50,000 to $55,000 in gold. But here's the detail that tells you it was a Cassidy job — they'd planted fresh horses every 20 miles along their escape route. Tire the law's mounts out chasing you, then jump onto rested ones and disappear. That kind of planning was his trademark.

Tipton and Wilcox are the only two robberies in Wyoming ever firmly pinned on the Wild Bunch. Two jobs, a year apart, and a gang that always seemed to be one fresh horse ahead.
