He believed an advanced lost civilization, gold and all, lay hidden in the Amazon — and he walked into the jungle to prove it, taking his son, and was never seen again.
Percy Fawcett gave the city a single, almost talismanic letter: "Z." Convinced it waited somewhere in the Brazilian interior, the explorer pushed into the Mato Grosso in 1925 and vanished there with his son. No confirmed trace of them, and no trace of Z, was ever found. The jungle closed over the expedition and turned a hunt for a lost city into one of the great disappearances of the century.
For decades, Fawcett's conviction looked like the obsession of a man who had read too much into the green wall of the Amazon — a fantasy of El Dorado dressed in scientific ambition. The forest was supposed to be too poor, too thin-soiled, to have held a great civilization.
Then the ground itself began to talk back. Modern archaeology has revealed large pre-Columbian settlements in the very region Fawcett probed — the Kuhikugu earthworks in the Xingu among them — evidence of dense, organized societies in the ancient Amazon. None of this is Z. None of it vindicates the gilded city Fawcett imagined. But it lends his core instinct an unexpected credibility: he was wrong about the details and stubbornly, partly right that the jungle hid more than anyone believed.
So the legend sits in two registers at once. The man and his "Z" were lost and never recovered — that is settled. Whether anything matching his vision ever existed is not, and the earthworks keep the question alive.
