The story
He was so rich that the keys alone were a burden. In Quranic and biblical tradition, Qarun — Korah — was a man of fabulous wealth, his riches so vast that the keys to his treasure chests had to be carried by a team of strong men just to bear the weight of them. And then the same tradition turns the parable on its head: for his arrogance, Qarun and all his treasure were swallowed by the earth, the ground opening to take the proud man and his gold down into itself.
It is one of the oldest cautionary tales of wealth there is — fortune so immense it could not be carried, pride so great it could not be borne, and an ending that buries both in a single instant. The riches did not pass to heirs or scatter into the world; they went down, whole, into the earth.
In Egypt, the legend found a home. Local folklore ties Qarun's story to the Faiyum region around Lake Qarun, fastening the ancient parable to a real landscape of water and reed. There, "Korah's treasure" has long been a staple of treasure-hunting lore — the idea that the swallowed gold lies somewhere beneath that ground, waiting, a fortune sealed away by the earth that took it.
This is legend through and through: a moral tale of wealth and ruin, anchored to a place by tradition rather than discovery. No hoard of Qarun has ever been found around Lake Qarun. But the story keeps its pull, because it offers the most irresistible premise a treasure legend can — riches beyond counting, hidden not by a man, but by the earth itself.
